Entry Level Officer

Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR)

5 Days | Online & In-Person Instruction

The Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR) Training Course provides mariners with the training needed to obtain a Master or Mate of Towing Vessels endorsement on their U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). The TOAR process ensures that towing officers have the necessary skills and experience to safely operate towing vessels. The program included coursework and instruction spanning:

  • Navigation and piloting

  • Towing operations

  • Vessel maneuvering

  • Emergency procedures

  • Communication and leadership

  • Regulatory compliance

TOAR endorsement is essential for advancing a mariner’s career in the towing industry, ensuring towing vessel officers have the skills to operate safely and meeting U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulatory requirements for operating towing vessels. At the end of the training, mariners will perform an assessment led by a USCG-approved Designated Examiner (DE) who will verify their competencies and course knowledge. â€‹â€‹

Tugboat Handling and ASD Fundamentals

5 Days | Online & In-Person Instruction

The Tugboat Handling and ASD Fundamentals course provides mariners with the essential training needed for ship assists, escorts and general tug handling while making and breaking tow. This program introduces students to Z-drive propulsion technology, focusing on its advantages, capabilities and application in modern tug operations. The coursework includes instruction in:

  • Tug operations and maneuvering

  • Z-drive propulsion technology

  • Ship assist and escort procedures

  • Making and breaking tow

  • Effective boat handling techniques

 

By the end of the course, mariners will gain hands-on experience in Azimuthing Propulsion Systems (ASD) and demonstrate their ability to effectively handle tugboats using this advanced technology. The course is open to anyone 18 years or older in need of training, from mariners within the ship docking sector to those in conventional tug operations.
